Registry fix also offers a free trial download just like RegCure. Although we found RegCure’s interface a bit easier to use than Registry fix’s, it still fixes registry errors in a similar way.

Benefits and Features

  • Missing file associations
  • Missing startup programs
  • Invalid device drivers
  • Invalid application paths
  • Missing DLL files
  • Missing help files
  • Missing system fonts
  • And much more!

3 reasons why you need Windows XP registry repair software

Posted on February 14th, 2008 in Registry cleaners | No Comments »

To read our review of the best registry cleaners click here!

There are essentially three reasons why you should have registry repair software installed on you PC.

1. Improving performance

The most common complaint I hear as a systems administrator is that PC performance has degraded since purchase. What happens is that every time you install and uninstall software on your PC your registy gets fragmented and bigger. Each time you startup your PC, Windows reads the registry to load hardware and software settings. The first time you start your brand new PC this registry database is small and ordered. After a while it’ s not ordered and big. This causes the decrease in performance due to longer reading of the registry.

You could compare it to a wardrobe. If all the clothes are stacked neatly you will find them fast, saving you time looking for them. But if they are not folded up neatly or in the right place, it will take you longer to find the ones you would like to wear. Registry cleaners order the registry in such a way that Windows will find what it needs quick and removes entries which are not used anymore.

2. Fixing PC errors

You get errors when you start Windows or when you start a program. Usually you get these boxes with cryptic error messages or so called runtime errors. These are also signs that registery settings have become corrupted.

3. Save money

Some people reinstall their operating system twice a year to solve performance problems or errors they keep on getting. If you send your PC to a store or get a computer technician to look at it it will cost you a lot. Your PC will be in the store or at the technician at least one day. Besides paying to get it reinstalled or to fix the errors for you, you will lose your PC which you may have to use to get work done. Buying registry repair software is a lot cheaper than getting your windows reinstalled or getting an computer engineer to look at the errors!
Besides usually they will also use somekind of registry repair software to fix your errors or speed issues for you.

Some people are afraid that this kind of software is hard to use or are afraid that they will break their PC using it. Fortunately most registry repair software will allow you to manually, or even better automatically, make a complete backup of your registry before youi make any changes to it. Make sure when you download your trial that the software has this option!

The usage of registry repair software is usually very easy and it will take a couple of minutes to scan your registry. After this scan it will show you the results and advise you to take action – for instance deletion of invalid keys.

Malware removers

Posted on August 10th, 2007 in Security | No Comments »

To read our review of the best spyware cleaners click  here!

One of the current biggest threats for computer users is called malware. It can hijack your computer, redirect you to other webpages, serve you pop up ads, collect and send information stored on your pc like online banking passwords. Besides doing it’s malicious purpose it also uses your pc’s resources making it slow and unstable. These programs are also hard to remove from your pc because they hide them self within Windows.

There are several ways to get infected with malware. There are programs you can download which are bundled with malware (like file sharing programs). Another way is software which gets installed while visiting certain websites asking permission to be installed to view the website or they take advantage of security holes in your browser allowing to be installed without permission or you seeing the process.

Malware can be divided up in the following categories:

Adware

Programs that displays pop-up ads when you are surfing the internet. It can also redirect you to other websites. Usually it shows you adverting related to the websites you are viewing but can also serve you advertising when you aren’t using the browser.

Spyware

This is basically software that is spying on you. It could be collecting information about your hardware and software. But it could also download information from your pc like email addresses to be sold to spammers. But also information like your name, login names and passwords, credit card numbers and phone numbers.

Dialers

Dialers are programs that connect to expensive phone numbers. The owner gets revenue just like when you would normally call such a number and you are left with a large phone bill. Most of these programs connect with these numbers without you knowing.

Toolbars

Toolbars can be installed as an extension to Internet Explorer and provide added functionality. For example it could add a search box or pop up blocker to Internet Explorer. Unfortunatly malware toolbars can also be downloaded which look a lot like the other “legitimate” toolbars. Examples of legitimate Toolbars are Google and Yahoo! toolbars.

Hijackers

Hijackers take control of your web browser. When you try to visit a website the software will redirect you to another website. Or when you mistype an address you wil lbe redirected to another website.

Use the following malware removers to rid your pc of Malware:

SpywareBot

XoftSpySE

NoAdware

Windows performance tips part II

Posted on July 16th, 2007 in Windows tips | No Comments »

The second part of our quick tips section.

  1. Still in the system properties window. Disable error reporting. This sends error reports to Microsoft. Click on the error reporting button at the bottom of the screen. Check the box that says “Disable error reporting” and uncheck the box that says “but notify me when critical errors occur”. Click on ok and apply.
  2. Turning off harddrive indexing. Windows XP makes an index of all the files on your harddrive to speed up file searching. Using this option will slow down your pc and unless you use it a lot you can disable this option. Open “My Computer” or press the Windows key and E. Then right click on each of the drives and select properties. Uncheck the box that says “Allow the indexing service to index this disk for fast file searching” under the General tab. In the pop up window select the box that says “Apply change to (drive letter):\, subfolders and files” and click on ok. After you have done each drive I would recommend to reboot.
  3. Uninstall unwanted programs. Besides increasing your available space on your harddrive it will decreases the number programs to start up. Go to the Control Panel, then select Add/Remove Software to see what packages are installed. Remove software you don’t want or use. In the top corner there is a dropdown menu called “Sort on”. Here you can select different sorting options. Besides “Name” you can also sort the list on the last time you used the program. Programs which aren’t used that often are probably safe to remove.
  4. Uninstall windows components. Remove windows components which you are not using. Besides saving you valuable hard drive space it reduces chances of having programs with security issues on your pc.
  5. Microsoft Bootvis. Microsoft BootVis is a program which analyzes your system during the startup of Windows and can optimize start up and shutdown times. It was originally developed for developers to analyze boot times and see where there are slowdowns.  You can download BootVis here.
  6. Microsoft PowerToys puts Windows XP on steriods. You can download Microsoft PowerToys here.
