Just like cars and other machines your PC needs regular tune ups too. Fortunately you do not need to be an computer technician to do these tune ups yourself.

Hardware cleaning

Every couple of months you need to clean the inside of the case. Screw the case open and take a cloth to remove the dust from the inside. Be careful and do not touch the motherboard directly with this cloth. Clean the fan on the processor with a dry cloth or slightly moist. You can also use a vacuum cleaner to suck up all the dust on the insides but be careful. If you have cats/dogs or smoke clean the inside of your PC more often. Cats and dogs lose hairs and the fan sucks this inside the PC. And smoking also causes the smoke to be sucked into the PC. Cleaning your PC regularly will extend the life of your PC and save you money in the long run.

Software tuneups

The operating system also needs regular maintenance to keep it running in shape. Windows comes with a utility to conduct maintenance.

disk fragmentation
This is caused by installation and uninstallation of new programs by you, and also by the updates provided by Microsoft. Use the disk fragmentation utility. You can start this by:

  1. Open My Computer.
  2. Right-click the local disk volume that you want to defragment, and then click Properties.
  3. On the Tools tab, click Defragment Now.
  4. Click Defragment.

Disk maintenance alone is not enough to keep your system running perfectly. Each time when you change settings, plug in new hardware or install new software this information will be written to the registry.

Unfortunately these entries in the registry are not always properly removed, causing performance degradation or failures like system errors. This is because invalid entries exists in their registry due to software which is no longer used or software which was not properly removed. As you keep on installing and uninstalling programs the register will get bigger and it will take Windows longer to load or cause problems because it cannot find certain entries.

Signs you need to conduct a thorough registry scan:

  • the start up times from power on till windows is running is longer than it used to be;
  • freezes or sudden lockups – also check your computer hardware (see above);
  • general performance degradation – slow start of programs;

With registry cleaning software you can successfully remove invalid entries from the registry resulting in better performance and a smooth running PC. Most registry repair software offer automatic backups of the registry and easy restores.
